CALFRESH APPLICATION PROCESS
How do I apply for CalFresh? What is does the application process look like?
Check out the following steps on what you can expect and how to complete the CalFresh Application:
- Step 1: Submit a prescreen eligibilty form or submit a Basic Needs Request Form.

Step 2: Meet with Basic Needs Services staff for application assistance or apply directly on your own at Get CalFresh.
Students can also stop by our CalFresh Drop-In hours to meet with Basic Needs Services staff. For the Spring 2024 semester, CalFresh Drop-In hours are held on Mondays and Thursdays from 2-4pm in MH 143 or virtualls on Zoom (meeting ID 878 8086 1095). Drop-In hours will not be held during campus closures. - Step 3: Once your application is submitted, the 30-day application period begins.

Step 4: During this 30 day period, you will need to have a phone interview with the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) and submit verification documents.

The interview: Complete your interview with the CDSS office by phone. The county office will either call or mail you a date and time for your interview.
- The CDSS may call from a blocked, anonymous, or unknown number. Answer the phone as it maybe the CDSS and they may or may not leave a voicemail. If you do miss the interview, call the CDSS as soon as possible and speak with your case worker about rescheduling. It is your responsibility to contact the Department of Social Services to reschedule your interview. Without your interview, you will not be approved for CalFresh benefits.

Verification documents: You will be required to provide verification documents to your county office. You can submit documents at the time of your application (recommended) or within the 30 day period. Your application will not be approved if you do not submit verification documents that meet their requirements.
- Examples of verification documents include:
- Copy of Photo ID
- Lease/rental agreements
- Pay stubs
- Student class schedule and Financial Aid award letter

The interview: Complete your interview with the CDSS office by phone. The county office will either call or mail you a date and time for your interview.
- Step 5: If approved, you will receive CalFresh benefits for 6 months through an EBT card, which will be mailed to you as well as a separate PIN code.
AFTER 6 MONTHS...

Step 6:
After six months, in order to continue your benefits after 6 months, you will be required to complete the following:
- Semiannual Report (SAR 7) 6 months after your initial application is approved. The California Department of Social Services will let you know when this is due. If you do not submit your SAR 7 recertification, your benefits will end.
- Step 7: After twelve months, you must complete a Recertification Application and be interviewed before the end of your certification period (usually 12 months after you are initially approved for benefits).The California Department of Social Services will let you know when your Recertification Application is due and will send you a letter confirming the date and time of your interview. If you do not submit your Recertification Application, your benefits will end.
